Every winter, like migratory birds, people working on climate change flock to some distant location. This year, it was the Caspian seashore of Baku in Azerbaijan. They don’t do this to escape the pollution of north India. They do it because they believe that if all countries come together at the annual climate summit of the UN (called the COP), they will be able to solve the problem of climate change. This has been going on for 29 years. This year’s COP29 started in inauspicious circumstances. The US elected Donald Trump, who will withdraw his country from the Paris Agreement on climate change, just as he did in 2016, meaning that the world’s richest economy will not offer any new climate finance. Germany, usually an advocate for European contributions to climate finance , saw its coalition govt collapse. Experts had estimated the need to raise $2.4 trillion per year for nature and climate, but COP29 closed with a kitty of only $300 billion per year by 2035. This is barely more than the earlier pot of $100 billion per year after allowing for inflation. And it will count not just grants that poor, vulnerable countries need, but also loans that they will have to repay, and money spent by developing countries themselves. Quite naturally, people might question the benefit of this multilateral process. If rich countries are not paying up, why should we have to answer to anyone? Three developments at COP29 show the relevance of continued engagement for India. First, many countries announced new targets to cut their greenhouse gas emissions . The UK’s emissions are now half of what they were in 1990, and it pledged to cut them by 81% of 1990 levels by 2035. Though it is a developing economy, Brazil announced that it will cut its emissions by at least 59% from 2005 levels by 2035. Indonesia and Mexico committed to reaching net-zero emissions by 2050. Such announcements send signals to Indian industry about potential markets. For example, with the European Union banning the sale of diesel or petrol cars after 2035 as part of its climate policy, Indian car makers could plan a shift to electric vehicle manufacturing, and Indian micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) can start pivoting to making electrical components and reskilling their workers. Similarly, with the new climate finance deal at COP29, multilateral development banks like the World Bank and Asian Development Bank will target their lending to climate-friendly activities, and Indian state govts can prepare project proposals for the needs identified in their State Action Plans on Climate Change. Second, COP29 agreed on the rules of the international carbon market, which can be a useful source of revenue for projects in India. It adopted common standards for methodologies to accurately measure and credit emission reductions, developed a sustainable development tool for social and environmental safeguards, and found a way to link carbon credit registries across countries. This means that Indian companies, MSME clusters, municipalities and gram panchayats will be able to sell carbon credits in three types of markets — the Indian carbon market that is being designed by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, the voluntary carbon market that already exists, and the international carbon market made possible by COP29. The Indian govt has already published a list of preferred project types that are more expensive and can benefit from international carbon credit revenue — not just solar power, but solar power with storage; not only onshore wind, but offshore wind; and emerging technologies like green hydrogen, green ammonia, sustainable aviation fuel, and carbon capture and storage. Third, next year’s COP30 hosted by Brazil in the Amazon rainforest will give as much priority to nature as to climate. This is important for our country too. For example, as India scales up its solar parks over the next few decades, it will be important to protect biodiversity and people’s livelihoods that depend on natural resources. We also have opportunities for behaviour change, such as switching to millets that need less irrigation. And we can reduce food waste — one study estimated almost 1,000 tons of food waste a year in 500 wedding halls in Bengaluru alone. COP30 is also planning a new treaty for tracing the supply chains of critical minerals like lithium, nickel and cobalt needed for renewable energy, electric vehicles and batteries. There are growing concerns in India about e-waste, mining, and import dependence, and this topic was discussed in India’s G-20 presidency last year. We can find value in e-waste and create rural jobs based on a circular economy to extract and process critical minerals. David Gooler, who gardens in Pasadena, responded to a recent column where I mentioned that Nuccio’s, the famed camellia and azalea nursery in Altadena , had been sold. It turns out that, due to the property’s zoning restrictions, the sale did not go through. So anyone who is interested in acquiring a five-acre nursery, including an additional 80 acres of undeveloped land, is welcome to make an offer. I should note that Gooler is such an enthusiastic patron of Nuccio’s that he took it upon himself to paint parking stripes on the nursery’s parking lot together with a space designated for handicapped parking. The nursery’s third-generation owners, 77-year-old Tom and 74-year old Jim, whom Gooler calls “salts of the earth,” have engendered the sort of relationships with customers that other businesses can only dream about. Gooler mentioned that the land where Burkard’s renowned nursery stood in Pasadena until it was sold in 2016 has also encountered zoning snafus so that it remains empty until today. Finally, Gooler informed me that Bellefontaine, another legendary Pasadena nursery that has been owned and operated by the same family for three generations, will probably be sold in the near future. After receiving Gooler’s email, I spoke with Jim Nuccio about the future of the nursery business. “We used to deliver our plants to 25-30 nurseries in the San Francisco area, and now we only sell to six,” he reported. “Niche nurseries like ours and smaller nurseries in general are probably going to disappear. You will have a few major growers that will specialize in around 50 different plants for sale to home improvement centers so the selection for the typical gardener is going to be drastically reduced.” I was astonished to learn that Jim himself drives his nursery’s delivery truck to San Francisco, a trip that he makes 12-15 times a year. He says that regardless of what happens with the sale of his nursery and land, he and his brother do not plan on working for more than another two years. Jim noted that the land for sale is sacred to the Gabrielino-Tongva tribe, which has expressed some interest in its acquisition. There is also an endangered bumblebee on site. I asked about propagation of camellias and azaleas and Jim related that May and June are the best months to do this. At his nursery, shoot tip cuttings, no more than three inches in length, are inserted into 18 inch square flats with around 200 cuttings per flat (10-12 rows of 20 cuttings per row). His nursery makes 75,000 cuttings per year. He uses a propagation mix that consists of 50% perlite and 50% peat moss. His nursery has a misting system that goes on every few minutes to water his cuttings for 20 seconds at a time and recommends that, in lieu of such a system, it would be wise to keep cuttings under a plastic dome to maintain the humidity around the cuttings. After experimenting with dipping his cutting bottoms in root hormone, he found that it made no difference in his propagation success. However, he recommends as an insurance policy that homeowners use liquid Dip ’N’ Grow hormone solution for propagation purposes. And then I received an email from Linda Prendergast that Tree of Life Nursery in San Juan Capistrano, which specializes in growing California natives, will be closing at the end of next year. A visit to the nursery website at californianativeplants.com reveals that everything from plants to equipment is meant to be liquidated by December of 2025, by which time the habitat that previously existed on the nursery site will be restored. On a positive note, Annie’s Annuals and Perennials, California’s elite exotic plant nursery, has been purchased by one of the nursery’s managers and her mother. Curious Flora Nursery ( curiousflora.com ) is the new name of this horticultural enterprise, which will remain at its Richmond location. At the moment, no mail orders are being taken, but this service is expected to resume before spring. These orders will be handled by Peaceful Valley Farm & Garden supply ( groworganic.com ), which has purchased the Annie’s Annuals brand and catalog. • • • A quarantine for homegrown fruit and vegetables is now in place over an 87 square mile area in Orange County due to the presence of oriental fruit fly; eight of these insects were trapped in Santa Ana and Garden Grove. This pest arrives here in produce brought or sent illegally from Southeast Asia, Africa, or Hawaii. California native of the week : Chaparral clematis (Clematis lasiantha) is a vine that flowers for as long as six months out of the year. It winds its way up into trees, shrubs, or pergolas to a height of 20 feet, preferring a shady exposure. It will even grow in deep shade, albeit at a slower rate, but can handle some sun as well. Flowers present a vibrant display of white petals topped by an abundance of golden stamens, followed by highly ornamental, spidery seed pods. Chaparral clematis has wide distribution, found along the coast from San Francisco down to Baja California while growing inland to the Sierra Nevada range as well. It is extremely drought-tolerant. It may require irrigation once a month but, properly placed, should never need to be watered. Chaparral or pipestem clematis is deciduous and may become invisible during winter only to regrow the following spring. I called Plant Material ( plant-material.com ), a purveyor of drought-tolerant plants and garden accessories — with locations in Altadena, Glassell Park, and Silver Lake — and learned they are expecting to have chaparral clematis in stock within the next four weeks. This is a reference to Paul Kelly's song and new film How to Make Gravy , where a prisoner named Joe writes a letter to his family four days before Christmas. In it Joe, missing his wife and relatives, asks, "Won't you kiss my kids on Christmas Day?". It's estimated half the men in Australian prisons are fathers . While they are incarcerated, maintaining contact with their children is vital, both for the dads and the kids . It allows fathers to keep contributing to their children's lives and provides important social support. It can also reduce psychological distress for children. One important way to do this is via "video visits," which were spurred on by COVID restrictions. In our recently published research , we look at how families experienced video visits in two New South Wales prisons. Our research Video visits can be challenging if there is a lack of facilities in homes and prisons or problems with technological support. But our study set out to understand how they might support father-child relationships, given their widespread use during lockdowns. We looked at one prison in an urban area and another in a regional area. A total of 27 fathers participated in interviews, of whom 11 identified as Aboriginal and four identified as culturally and linguistically diverse. We also interviewed 17 caregivers, who were mostly mothers. They looked after children ranging from infants to teenagers. Recognizing each other One way video visits support father-child relationships is allowing children to see and get to recognize their father's faces and for the father to see the growing child. As one caregiver said, "She knew and recognized over the last two years that daddy's on the phone, daddy's on the iPad [...] So, even though it was once a week she got familiar, seeing his face." Fathers valued the visual contact with their children as well, to allow them to see how their children were changing and growing: "[...] there's a huge difference, such a big difference between a phone call and a video call . The visual contact, you can't hear a smile. You can hear laughter, but you can only see someone's joy in their face by seeing them visually." Another caregiver added, "As you know, five years is a long time, especially for a little kid. So, he got to watch him grow every week." Part of family life Caregivers appreciated the flexibility of video visits and how they could integrate them into daily life. Visits could take place at children's sports activities or the beach. They could show their fathers their rooms, their art or the dance they just learned. One caregiver said they organized events like blowing out candles on a birthday cake around video visits. When organized in the home, it means video visits are happening where children are secure and familiar. As one caregiver told us: "[The child] does better on video than he does in person. On video, you know he's in his home. He's in his comfort [zone]. He can do whatever he likes. He can show [his father] his room. He can get new toys [...] his options are a lot more there." A father told us, "They're happy, they're comfortable, they're not shy, they actually want to talk to you. It's not like they have to stay here and talk to you. They can run off and come back." Another caregiver described how video visits enabled the child's fathers to observe some of his "firsts." "When [the child] first learned to crawl. I put the phone up against the lounge and I moved [the child] maybe about half a meter away from the phone and I said to [the child], 'go on, crawl to Daddy,' and [the child] crawled straight up to the phone and gave the phone a kiss." Several caregivers pointed out that the prison environment could be distressing for children. Not only did this sometimes involve hours of travel, but there were people they did not know, long waits and security processes to go through. As one caregiver said, "it's not somewhere you bring kids." Another told us: "[the child] was really quite scared at the other inmates around. And yeah, so he actually prefers the video calls." There are challenges Interviewees also described some challenges with video visits, noting younger children quickly lose interest and "run off." They also said children could be upset at the end of a visit, particularly when it ended abruptly. "You know you'd get a beep, and then it'd switch off [...] But you know there was times where that was very difficult, with [the child] in the middle of something like chatting about her day, and then, all of a sudden it will cut off, and she will get quite upset and not understand." What next? Our study strongly suggests these types of visits are important for families. Future work should focus on ways to improve the quality of visits and ask children for their views about what they want. This is not to suggest video visits should replace in-person visits but they can help fathers and their children maintain a genuine relationship. If they can't be together, at least dads can give their children a virtual kiss on Christmas Day. Final: Syracuse 102, Albany 85 The Orange had its best offensive game of the season as it defeated its upstate New York rival in the University at Albany Great Danes, 102-85, in the JMA Wireless Dome on Tuesday night. Syracuse shot over 60% from the field, 40% from 3, and hit just less than 90% of its foul shots in one of the most complete games offensively of the season. One of the players that helped make that happen was freshman Donnie Freeman. After coming off the bench, the forward led the team in scoring with a career-high 24 points. Freeman shot 10-13 from the field and a career-best 4-4 from beyond the arc. Prior to this contest, the freshman had only made three triples on the year. The start of the contest was tight through the first 10 minutes of the half. SU eventually began to separate itself from Albany, in large part of its bench production. The Orange ended the game with 45 bench points and the squad saw a lot of that materialize early. Kyle Cuffe, who typically plays sparingly towards the back of the rotation, scored 10 points in the first half without missing a shot. His play, along with a Syracuse offense who found ways to consistently get good looks in the paint, helped the team lead 47-34 at the half. The second half saw the Orange continue to score at a high clip. The home team led by as much as 24 in the contest. Chris Bell got going in the second half to finish with 18 points. Jyare Davis, who started in place of Freeman, scored 15 points. A lot of the baskets scored were credited to Jaquan Carlos who ended the game with a season-high 12 assists to go along with 12 points, another best of the season. Amar’e Marshall led the Great Danes in scoring with 18 points. The victory over Albany for Syracuse makes them a perfect 9-0 in a series that dates back over 100 years. Second half 2:16 remaining: Syracuse 90, Albany 77 Lampkin throws a no-look, behind-the-back bounce pass to Davis who finishes with the dunk. Freeman knocks down his third triple of the contest, now 3-3 from beyond the arc. Coming into the contest he only made three triples throughout the entire season so far. Moore drives and finds Freeman for the slam dunk. Another triple for Freeman, who is now up to 22 points on the evening. 7:55 remaining:, Syracuse 76, Albany 59 Freeman hits his second 3 of the night off a feed from Carlos who now is up to nine assists on the night. Freeman used the shot fake to let his defender fly by before finishing with the slam. The freshman is now up to 14 points after not being in the starting lineup. Lucas Taylor twists and turns to put up the shot while drawing the foul. 11:24 remaining:, Syracuse 68, Albany 47 Freeman knocks down the triple that bounced around before it dropped in. Moore throws an over the head pass down to Majstorovic who finished inside. Bell knocks down a pair at the free throw line after getting fouled on a drive. A few plays later, Bell gets fouled on the pull-up jumper and knocks it down for the three-point play. 15:17 remaining: Syracuse 57, Albany 40 Carlos makes his way into the paint and finishes with the scoop at the hoop. On the next play, Carlos finds a streaking Davis who finishes with the dunk in transition. Davis soars up for the offensive rebound before going back up with the jump hook. Carlos gets downhill and finishes again at the basket. Largest lead of the night for the Orange at 17. Halftime: Syracuse 47, Albany 34 A major boost off the bench for Syracuse has helped them capture a double digit lead against the University of Albany. The Orange have 22 bench points at the break. The majority of the scoring has come from guard Kyle Cuffe who has 10 points and is perfect from the field. Donnie Freeman, who came off the bench in this one, has six points. Freeman did not start the game as a result of a personal issue. Coach Adrian Autry also elected to start freshman Elijah Moore for the first time this season. The game had been close for the first ten or so minutes of action. But it was Syracuse who managed to continually get high percentage shots at the rim. They shot nearly 60 percent from the field in the first half, and a lot of that was due to SU’s shot selection. 34 points for the home team came in the paint. If Albany has any chance of getting the win, they will have to find a way to slow down Syracuse’s offense. The Orange has 12 assists right now as a team. They average around 14 per game, so they are certainly operating at a high level right now on that side of the ball. Albany guards Amar’e Marshall and Kheni Briggs each have seven to lead the Great Danes. First half Lampkin finds Freeman cutting down low for a dunk. The center is up to three assists so far. Moore turns down the jumper and scores the reverse layup. Lampkin tip-toes the baseline to finish from underneath the basket. The big then finds a cutting Bell for the and-one finish. 3:49 remaining: Syracuse 38, Albany 28 Cuffe knocks down a pair at the line. Eddie Lampkin throws a touch pass to Davis for the dunk. Cuffe finishes with the contact in transition, up to ten points in the contest off the bench. 6:28 remaining: Syracuse 32, Albany 24 Carlos finds Freeman cutting for a two-handed slam dunk out of the time out. The guard then gets to the rim himself and scores the layup. Moore fakes out the defender with the shot fake before going up-an-under with the reverse layup. Kyle Cuffe Jr. knocks down the triple in some rare early minutes. Majstorovic deflects the pass, tracks it down the length of the floor before Freeman gets the ball and dunks it. Cuffe knocks down his second triple of the game. Big boost off the bench for SU so far. 11:40 remaining: Syracuse 14, Albany 14 Freeman checks into the game with 14:38 remaining in the first half. Davis bullies his way inside to finish off the drop-step move. Six early points for him. Elijah Moore follows up his own missed shot, grabbed the rebound, and then went up for another jumper that he knocked down. He struggled last game after back-to-back games dropping career-highs. Bell scores inside for his second basket. Petar Majstorovic scores the short jumper from about 10 feet out. Officials review an earlier 3 and change it to a 2-point basket. 15:54 remaining: Albany 9, Syracuse 7 Jyare Davis scores his first basket with a finish inside. Three Syracuse turnovers in the first two and a half minutes against an Albany team that isn’t particularly stalwarts on the defensive end. Jaquan Carlos finds Davis cutting baseline for the alley-oop slam over the defender. Chris Bell knocks down his first 3 of the night. The Orange as a whole didn’t make a single triple in its last time out against Notre Dame. Pregame Update: 6:45 p.m.: Adrian Autry has shuffled his starting lineup, inserting Elijah Moore for Lucas Taylor and Jyare Davis for Donnie Freeman. Freeman is not in the starting lineup as a result of a personal issue. Syracuse (4-4) returns home to the Dome to face the University at Albany (6-4). Despite the two programs being just two hours away, the last time they met was during the 2011-12 season. That matchup saw the Orange handily defeat the Great Danes, 98-74, and historically the series has followed that same trend. SU has won all eight prior matchups in a series that goes all the way back to 1918. The Orange, however, haven’t been as successful in recent outings overall. They recently lost 69-64 against Notre Dame. The game was the second in a row without the services of guard J.J. Starling. Both Donnie Freeman and Jyare Davis scored 20 points a piece in the loss. For UAlbany, they are coming off an 80-74 overtime loss to Boston University over the weekend. Offensively, this team can attack from a bunch of different angles. Four players average 10 or more points for the Great Danes, headlined by Byron Joshua who averages 13.6 points per game. One Thing To Keep An Eye On: Can SU Stay Undefeated At Home? Syracuse has played its best basketball on the Dome floor. All four of its wins this season have been at home. Although the injury to Starling will definitely be apparent at times offensively, the Orange will rely on its fans to give it the extra boost it needs to stay unbeaten at home.
