The governor appointed Bain to the 9th Judicial Circuit to replace Worrell, who beat him in last month's election to retake the Orlando metro area's top prosecutor's office. “While I accept the results of the election and wish to do everything I can to ensure the Office is successful going forward, I do not yet feel I can assist her in that transition,” Bain wrote. Worrell's new term is slated to begin Jan. 7, 2025. She is one of two elected state attorneys, both Democrats, who DeSantis has removed from office. Worrell failed to prosecute minors and didn’t seek mandatory minimum sentences for gun crimes, putting her central Florida district in danger. ACCRA, Ghana (AP) — Ghana’s former leader John Dramani Mahama was declared the winner of the presidential election on Monday and pledged a “a life of limitless opportunity” for citizens after voters vented their anger over the country’s worst cost-of-living crisis in a generation. Previously president of the West African nation between 2012 and 2017, the 65-year-old Mahama received 56.5% of votes cast, or 6.3 million votes, the electoral commission said. His main opponent from the current governing party, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, conceded defeat on Sunday and got 41%, or 4.6 million votes. Electoral commissioner Jean Mensa said vote-counting continued in nine constituencies but would not change the final result. Turnout was just over 60%. Mahama had promised to “reset” the country on various fronts. His campaign prioritized the economy and largely appealed to young Ghanaians who saw the vote as a way out of the economic crisis . It wasn’t as good of a game for Kirk Cousins as he struggled to make much of an impact against his former team. Here are five takeaways from the Vikings’ 42-21 win over the Falcons: The ascension of Darnold continues There were audible “MVP! MVP! MVP!” chants as the game between the Vikings and Falcons wound to a close. They were for Darnold, who completed 22 of 28 passes for 347 yards and five touchdowns, proving that the Vikings are legitimate Super Bowl contenders with him at the helm. There aren’t many quarterbacks in the NFL that have played better than Darnold over the past month. In that span, Darnold has completed 85 of 125 passes for 1,158 yards and 11 touchdowns, while leading the Vikings to a 4-0 record. ADVERTISEMENT Will he actually win MVP? Not likely. Does he deserve to be in the conversation? Absolutely. More empty stats for Cousins Never mind that Cousins put up some prolific numbers, completing 23 of 37 passes for 344 yards. He also threw a pair of interceptions and failed to keep the game competitive. There were countless games while he was playing for the Vikings that featured a similar script. It was commonplace for Cousins to pad his stats in garbage time of a game that he had no chance of winning. Now, that’s a problem the Falcons are navigating in real time. After some strong play from Cousins earlier this season, he has regressed over the past month, and as a result, the Falcons have an 0-4 record in that span. ADVERTISEMENT No answer for Jefferson and Addison The dynamic duo of Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison rewrote the record books for the Vikings in the win over the Falcons. They became the only players in franchise history to each record more than 100 yards receiving and a pair of touchdowns in the same game. That’s an insane stat considering Randy Moss and Cris Carter played together as did Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen. In total, Jefferson finished with seven catches for 132 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while Addison finished with eight catches for 133 yards and a trio of touchdowns. ADVERTISEMENT An effective game for Jones After being held in check last time out, Aaron Jones bounced back with a solid effort for the Vikings against the Falcons. He was extremely effective carrying the ball and finished with 13 rushes for 73 yards and a touchdown. The fact that Jones was able to find pay dirt late in the game was a nice reward for him, considering he was an unsung hero on offense. As explosive as the Vikings proved to be throughout the air, Jones provided a nice changeup on the ground, which helped in chewing up clock down the stretch. As somebody who had a lot of success in the final month of last season, Jones is well on his way to replicating that this season. Some opportunistic takeaways Though the defense for the Vikings struggled at times, allowing nearly 500 yards of total offense, it also stepped up a couple of times to force key turnovers. ADVERTISEMENT Whether it was Josh Metellus recording an interception early, or Byron Murphy with an interception late, the defense needed both of them to help turn the tide in the game. There was also an important forced fumble from Brian Asamoah on special teams that ended up being recovered by C.J. Ham. Penn State has been campaigning — hard — for Tyler Warren to get national nods from the John Mackey Award, the Paul Hornung Award and maybe even the Heisman Trophy. One of those things came through Tuesday. Warren was added as a finalist for the Mackey Award, given to the nation’s best tight end. He was honored alongside Michigan’s Colston Loveland and Bowling Green’s Harold Fannin Jr. After debating entering the NFL Draft after last season, Warren sure seems to have made the right decision. He leads Penn State with 75 receptions for 910 yards and five touchdowns. He’s also rushed 18 times for 157 yards and four scores. Oh yeah, he’s also thrown a few passes, one for a touchdown, and punted against Minnesota. The Virginia native holds Penn State single-season records for tight end receptions and receiving yards, while he holds the most receiving yards for a tight end in their career and is tied for the most receiving touchdowns by a tight end. He made the game-clinching catch against Minnesota this weekend on a later fourth-and-1, a play in which he could’ve scored easily to break another record. But he went down to run the clock out, a show of his commitment to winning above all else. “It’s the best thing to do in terms of managing that situation and winning the game and not having to kickoff again, ending on our terms,” James Franklin said Monday. “So just really, really cool play and not surprising that Tyler Warren is going to put the team first. I’m a big believer in that. The more you give to others and pour into others, it comes back to you ten times. Tyler Warren is a perfect example of that.” Warren is also a Paul Hornung Award finalist for college football’s most versatile player. Fannin has made a great case for the award himself, and Bowling Green has pushed as hard if not harder than Penn State to make it happen. Falcons strategic communications staff have been sending press releases about Fannin since Oct. 9. He has 92 receptions for 1,295 yards and nine touchdowns this season. Like Warren, Fannin has rushed some, too. He has six rushes for 51 yards and a score. Loveland will probably be the odd man out in this race. He has 56 receptions for 582 yards and five touchdowns. CARTER NAMED BEDNARIK AWARD FINALIST Junior defensive end Abdul Carter is back on national awards lists. Penn State’s star pass rusher was named a finalist for the Chuck Bednarik Award on Tuesday, given annually to the nation’s best defensive player and presented by the Maxwell Football Club. Carter was joined as a finalist by Colorado cornerback Travis Hunter and Ohio State safety Caleb Downs. Carter, already a finalist for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy (defensive player of the year), has 48 total tackles, eight sacks, 17.5 tackles for loss and two forced fumbles this season. His 17.5 tackles for loss are third-best in the country and best in the Big Ten, while his eight sacks are tied for 20th in the country and fourth in the conference. He’s made a significant impact in his first season since switching from linebacker to defensive end, earning Pro Football Focus’s 10th best defensive grade among edge rushers at 86.9. His pass-rushing grade is slightly better at 90.7, ranking fourth-best in the nation. The Philadelphia native is also a semifinalist for the Lombardi Trophy (best lineman) and the Lott IMPACT Trophy. Hunter is the betting favorite to win the Heisman this year, largely thanks to the fact that he plays both corner and wide receiver for the Buffaloes. He has 30 tackles, three interceptions, nine pass breakups and a forced fumble this season.
