( MENAFN - AFP) Japanese Stocks rose Friday on a weaker yen after a muted day on Wall Street following the Christmas holiday. Japan's key NIKKEI index was up more than 1 percent in morning trade, after the yen hit 158.08 per US dollar on Thursday evening -- its lowest level in almost six months. The Nikkei had closed up 1.1. percent on Thursday, boosted by comments from the bank of Japan chief and share price gains for top-selling automaker Toyota. "Today's Japanese market is expected to start with an upswing, continuing the upward momentum of the previous day's Japanese market, driven by the weak yen, while the US market was slightly mixed," said Kosuke Oka, an analyst at Monex Securities. The yen was "marginally stronger" on Friday, Bloomberg reported, after data showed inflation in Tokyo rose for a second month in December. Other positive figures from Japan showed industrial production declined less than expected in November while retail sales came in higher than estimated last month. With the country's unemployment rate holding at 2.5 percent in November -- low by international standards but slightly above Japan's pre-pandemic average -- Moody's Analytics said Friday that the data confirmed their view that "employment conditions are wobbly". Investor attention is now focused "on whether the Nikkei average will expand its rise to recover to the 40,000 points range by the end of the year", added Oka from Monex. Bank of Japan (BoJ) Governor Kazuo Ueda had bewildered observers last week by suggesting a prolonged pause in the institution's monetary policy tightening, in the face of domestic and international economic uncertainties, which had sent the Japanese currency tumbling. On Wednesday, Ueda said rates would be "adjusted" if the situation continued to improve on the economic and price fronts, leaving investors without a clear signal on a possible interest rate hike and contributing to the yen's slide. "With the calendar year winding down and little in the way of tier-one economic data, the market is content mainly to drift until something shakes it from its slumber -- likely a late-year squeeze or perhaps a Trump-driven shift in global economic sentiment," said Stephen Innes from SPI Asset Management, ahead of US President-elect Donald Trump retaking the White House in January. In New York on Thursday, major indices veered in and out of positive territory in a sleepy post-Christmas session. The broad-based S&P 500 finished down less than 0.1 percent. Large tech companies that have led the market in much of 2024 mostly took a breather, including Netflix, Tesla and Amazon, which all declined. In Asia, Hong Kong and Shanghai were down Friday morning. Seoul dropped about 1.5 percent as South Korea struggles to shake off political turmoil sparked by suspended President Yoon Suk Yeol's martial law declaration that shocked the world early this month. Sydney, Wellington and Taipei rose. Investment to establish over 3,000 charging stations and a manufacturing plant, supporting Pakistan’s green energy transition Chinese enterprise ADM Group has announced a $350 million investment in Pakistan’s electric vehicle (EV) sector, backed by the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC), according to Radio Pakistan. The initiative aims to develop the EV ecosystem, reduce carbon emissions, and decrease reliance on traditional fuels. As part of this investment, 3,000 EV charging stations will be established nationwide. The deployment will see 1,000 stations in Sindh, 1,500 in Punjab, and 750 across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. Additionally, ADM Group has allocated $250 million to set up an EV manufacturing plant, while another $90 million will be invested in building charging infrastructure. The new EVs will feature a range of up to 300 kilometers per charge, marking a significant step toward affordable and sustainable transportation. This move aligns with Pakistan’s policy goal of achieving 30% eco-friendly car sales by 2030, as part of its broader green energy transition. The initiative builds upon ADM Group’s earlier announcement of a $250 million EV investment, with plans to integrate global resources and manufacturing technologies for locally produced vehicles. ADM also envisions exporting EVs to Middle Eastern and Asian markets, with potential annual revenue of $900 million. ADM Group CEO Yasir Bhambhani previously highlighted the two-phase approach: establishing a nationwide EV charging network, followed by the manufacturing of vehicles. The plant is expected to produce 72,000 units annually, ranging from economical hatchbacks to luxury sedans and commercial vans. This latest investment underscores ADM’s commitment to Pakistan’s EV sector, supporting government initiatives to cut carbon emissions and promote green energy solutions. While the EV market continues to grow globally—with sales exceeding 10 million units in 2022—Pakistan’s proactive approach could position it as a competitive player in the region. ADM’s strategic efforts complement Pakistan’s broader push for sustainability, enhancing connectivity through EV charging networks and fostering economic growth in the renewable energy sector. Jaishankar urged the balance of technology and tradition, believing this synergy supports India's ascent as a major power. Following the conferral of the 27th SIES Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswati National Eminence Award, the minister celebrated the award's focus on spiritualism and community leadership. Echoing the need for self-awareness, Jaishankar commended democratic advancements and tasked the new generation to cherish India's heritage. After losing its high-profile case in the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia last week, TikTok is now one step closer to being outright banned in this country. If the Chinese-owned app fails to find a political ally in the incoming Trump administration by Jan. 19 (or new domestic ownership), mind-numbing scroll sessions and moronic viral stunts will soon be unavailable for its 170 million American users. While many may view the Biden administration’s actions as overreach, a ban on TikTok would be an act many American parents are desperate to see: the restriction of social media for their children. The harmful effects of predatory algorithms on young people are now as obvious as the link between cigarette smoking and lung cancer. Last year, the US Surgeon General warned the nation that young people who engaged in “more than 3 hours per day on social media faced double the risk of experiencing poor mental health outcomes including symptoms of depression and anxiety.” However, protecting our children from Silicon Valley (and China) isn’t as simple as banning cancerous apps. It’s a reality being demonstrated right now in Australia. Late last month, the Land Down Under passed ground-breaking legislation to outright ban social media for anyone under 16. The new rules toss TikTok, Facebook, Snapchat, Reddit, X, and Instagram onto barbie and fine those companies up to $50 million AUD (about $33 million) for failing to restrict kids from their content. Parents cheered the law, with polls showing that 77% of Australians approve of the government’s new rules. In theory, I do, too. I immigrated to Australia from the US in 2022 and am now the father of a true-blue Aussie ’roo. Like many parents, my wife and I began planning our family’s approach to “screen time” at conception — and a world where scrolling is simply not an option seems like a better one. Unfortunately, Australia’s “fair dinkum” (or cynically political) attempts to woo parents like me are not as straightforward as they might seem. And they won’t be in the US, either. “I think many parents are struggling,” says Lisa Given, an information studies scholar at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. “They see [the ban] as the government trying to do something. But at the end of the day, the question is, ‘How is this going to be policed?’ “ In fact, no one knows how Australia’s ban will function in practice once it begins in the coming year. All social media users could now be asked to log on with a government-issued ID such as a driver’s license (which the government has said it won’t require). Or worse still, and perhaps even more likely, social media companies will begin using facial recognition or biometrics to confirm a user’s age (although initial reports suggest this approach is less successful for kids who are not Caucasian ). The third approach is “pattern recognition” — tracking a user’s overall internet activity to make a guess at their age. That would require a high level of general internet surveillance and open the doors to privacy issues a la mode. Welcome to China. “I don’t think this will be successful if you are thinking about it as a way to protect children from harm,” says Given. “Many children will still be able to access content, whether they’re using a technical workaround like a VPN, or just a shared device in the home . . . What we actually need to combat are things like image-based abuse, we need to target the algorithms.” And, of course, where there is a will, there’s a way: Teens still vape, they still sneak booze and they’ll still find a way to meme dankly. It’s hard to believe the ban isn’t, on some level, subterfuge to monitor and censor every Australian’s internet activity. Even if it isn’t, the ban leaves the door wide open to government snooping. Worse still, we already know that there is a better way: Tech companies have the ability to modify their algorithms so that they aren’t force-feeding negative content to their users. But they won’t if the government, namely the US government, doesn’t force them. Otherwise, it’s business as usual, greed over good. Sorry Australia, the dingo ate your baby.
