The case of the woman who dodged TSA checkpoints and a US airline’s boarding protocols to hop on a flight to Paris is raising alarms about a wider aviation security problem. Multiple similar breaches of security have occurred within air travel, including some this year, but they often go undocumented. During one of the busiest travel periods on record for the Transportation Security Administration, Svetlana Dali, 57, slipped past airport security and made her way onto a flight over Thanksgiving from New York to Paris, making it most of the way there before being detected. Her case made international headlines, but stowaways are not as uncommon as travelers may think. This example, and many others over the years, have sounded alarms to public officials on protocols and safety. Airlines, too, have developed security plans to ensure things go according to plan. But even then, people can slip through. Although the reported cases are few, they happen all over the world, according to Alexandra James, an analysis output manager at Osprey Flight Solutions , which analyzes security risks in the aviation sector. She has written a case study on stowaway situations. James said she draws information from open-sourced information, such as media reports. “I hesitate to say [this happens] a lot, but I wouldn’t hesitate to acknowledge it as a security weakness,” James said. One potential solution — electronic gate technology that allows only one passenger to pass through at a time — would require more federal investment, aviation security officials have said. Security failures Dali was charged with being a stowaway on a vessel or aircraft without consent, among other federal charges. She was released from custody with more than a dozen conditions, CNN reported, but then 10 days later, she was taken into custody again, this time trying to sneak into Canada on a bus. Prosecutor Brooke Theodora said Dali told investigators she had tried to stow away before at a number of airports. She highlighted a police report from February 2024 indicating Dali tried to enter a secure arrivals area at Miami International Airport and get through customs to the planes, going against people arriving and trying to leave the airport. She points to a handful of reported cases in 2024, including Dali’s case, which happened despite a slew of security measures implemented at airports in the more than two decades since 9/11. James said Hartman’s and Dali’s cases are interesting because their demographics, white women in their 50s and 60s, may not seem like a threat to some security officers. “This incident demonstrates that possibly more needs to be done to raise awareness of the fact that profiling isn’t necessarily the most effective way of determining whether somebody’s a threat,” James said. The upside, according to Juliette Kayyem, a former Department of Homeland Security official, is that Dali didn’t end up being much of a threat. Despite this, Kayyem, also a senior national security analyst for CNN, called it a “complete failure.” “She falls outside of every high-risk profile by age, gender and ethnicity and therefore, that might explain why the systems did not pick her up,” Kayyem said. Lessons learned While these instances might occur more than we realize, they are still “exceedingly rare,” according to former TSA administrator John Pistole. “It gets a lot of attention because it shouldn’t happen,” Pistole said. While he was running TSA during the Obama administration, Pistole said TSA introduced risk-based security. Some of it is organic audience growth, some of it is audience growth but putting those clips on social media and promoting the games that you’re doing.” The diaspora form a crucial part of that GAA viewership community as it keeps people engaged with their home club despite the vast distance from where they reside now. They represent about 10% of Streamsport’s audience number. At home however, streaming can be a divisive word. Many will argue that it discourages fans from attending the games in person, thereby compromising the matchday atmosphere and reducing gate receipts for county boards. It’s the “age old concern” that Doyle hears about. But both Rocca and Doyle stress that putting the games on an online platform enables the GAA to draw in more fans, and ultimately, grow as a sport. “If a person is determined to go to a match,” says Rocca, “they’re going to go to it. If it’s absolutely bucketing outside, and just watch it at home, that’s a different argument. “There’s a good chance that if it wasn’t being streamed, they might not go at all because the weather is too bad. But if they watch it at home, I think you’ve gained a viewer rather than losing one.” Although streaming GAA games is proving to be viable for both Clubber and Streamsport, Doyle notes that the profit margins “are tight.” In terms of the cost involved in covering a typical game, Clubber could spend anything from a few hundred euro up to €2,000. It all depends on the number of cameras and commentators that are required to provide adequate coverage. Clubber hopes to expand operations and explore opportunities outside of Ireland. Doyle opted not to divulge on the details but says they’re “working on a few things” that will bring them into the global market. GAA analysis remains a major passion project for Doyle too, and Clubber aim to launch a product that enables teams to study the game more deeply. “The three key things it offers are: using AI in the background to automatically tag the game for you. Here’s all your kickouts, wides, scores and turnovers. The second thing is, as we build our portfolio of games that we cover, we will have a rounded view of all games so you can go in to analyse your own game and the opposition’s game. “And the third thing, which most analysis systems have, is a nice easy interface to cut clips for your players, have individual conversations with players on clips. We’re conscious that there’s a marketplace out there where there’s a lot of analysts doing this for a lot of clubs. We want to see ourselves as an addition to them rather than taking their jobs away.” Streamsport has expansion plans to work towards too. Rocca wants to cover more schools rugby and boxing, and has also worked with the Connacht and Munster provincial rugby bodies. For the latter side, they covered Munster v All Blacks XV for Access Munster in October. He’s veering into podcasting too, as well as building on the number of Ladies Football games they’ve covered by targeting some of the LGFA league games that aren’t being televised in the new year. Women’s sport is an area that Clubber also wants to branch into, a personal ambition for Doyle who has four daughters. Now that he has a better understanding of what providing a good viewing experience entails, he’s long past the days of worrying about the company’s future. Looking at what lies ahead for GAA streaming, Doyle feels the margins are too tight for many other companies to find a place in the market. Rocca believes that the GAA could become more involved in regulating the industry. “I could see the GAA looking to take a bit more control over streaming. “County boards would still have autonomy but it would be the GAA’s own official platform, kind of like an expansion of GAA GO. Would that be an issue for us? No, not necessarily. Whichever way we operate, it doesn’t matter to us. We just want to produce a quality product for our viewers. Whether that’s through county boards or through an overarching streaming arm, then that’s no issue.”

In an exclusive conversation with Greater Kashmir , Dr Muzamil Majid Khan shared his inspiring journey and insights from the small village in Baramulla to the renowned research hubs of Heidelberg into the drug that could transform the lives of millions worldwide. A widely available cough suppressant, dextromethorphan, may hold the key to treating lung fibrosis, a serious condition that currently has no cure. The discovery, part of a study published in the December 2024 issue of Science Translational Medicine, represents a major step forward in combating the disease, which affects over 7.61 lakh people in Europe alone, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). Dr Khan, a Kashmiri scientist currently based at EMBL Heidelberg in Germany is the first author of the paper. Lung fibrosis is caused by excessive scarring in the lungs due to an accumulation of collagen, leading to tissue stiffness, breathing difficulties, and, in severe cases, organ failure. The risk factors include environmental irritants like asbestos, chemotherapy side effects, or autoimmune conditions. Dr Khan and his colleagues aimed to identify effective treatments for the condition by repurposing existing drugs. “We wanted to discover novel drugs for lung fibrosis, knowing the challenges of developing new ones. Dextromethorphan stood out during our screening of FDA-approved drugs,” Dr Khan said. The research team employed cutting-edge techniques, including a “scar-in-a-jar” assay – an in vitro model that mimics the fibrotic scarring process. This high-throughput screening method allowed them to identify dextromethorphan as a drug that inhibits collagen trafficking in cells. Further studies using advanced technologies like proteomics, transcriptomics, and microscopy uncovered how the drug blocks the accumulation of collagen, reducing scarring in human lung fibroblasts, 3D-cultured lung tissues, and mouse models of lung fibrosis. Collaborating with the Translational Lung Research Center Heidelberg and Thoraxclinic, the team is now preparing for phase II clinical trials to evaluate dextromethorphan’s effects on human patients. Dr Khan’s path to this groundbreaking discovery is as remarkable as the study itself. Hailing from Hanjiwera Bala, a small village in Kashmir’s Baramulla district, his academic journey began in local schools before continuing in Srinagar. He attended Public High School, Gogji Bagh, and Jawahar Nagar Higher Secondary School before earning his Bachelors in Science at SP College, Srinagar. A turning point came when he secured a junior research position in the lab of the late Prof Obaid Siddiqi at NCBS, Bangalore. This opportunity set the foundation for his scientific career. Dr Khan pursued his PhD at the University of Heidelberg and now works as a staff scientist at EMBL Heidelberg, specialising in respiratory diseases and drug discovery.
